Facility Management Technician Diploma

Our Facility Management Technology Diploma program is dedicated to providing hands-on training, equipping students with the skills needed to excel in the dynamic field of facility management. Through real-life scenarios, students learn to navigate complex challenges, address crises, and manage complaints across various building types, including airports, schools, stores, and homes. Designed to train technicians in the operation and maintenance of large, complex buildings, this program emphasizes efficiency, sustainability, and the integration of diverse disciplines.

Program Highlights:

  1. Wide Range of Duties: Facility Management Technicians play a pivotal role in ensuring efficient operations, safety compliance, cost savings, and productivity enhancement within buildings. They draw upon multiple disciplines such as communication, emergency preparedness, leadership, project management, and operations to integrate people, places, processes, and technology effectively.
  2. Practical Learning: Our program focuses on practical training, with students spending a significant portion of their time engaged in hands-on activities. From preventive maintenance to operating and monitoring HVAC systems, students gain invaluable experience in managing complex facilities.
  3. Co-op Experience: A significant portion of the program includes a 35-week co-op placement with a licensed Facility Management Company. Under the supervision of qualified technicians, students gain practical experience in real-world settings, further enhancing their skills and knowledge.
  4. Industry-Relevant Curriculum: Developed in consultation with industry experts, our program is tailored to meet the demands of the Facility Management Technology industry. Graduates are prepared for daily operations and maintenance tasks, contributing to the strengthening of British Columbia’s economy.
  5. Focus on Safety: Safety is paramount in facility management. Our program includes comprehensive training in worksafe BC regulations, workplace safety, and certifications in WHMIS, Working at Heights, Elevating Work Platforms, Lockout & Tag Safety, Scaffold Users’ Hazard Awareness, and Confined Spaces Hazard Awareness.

Program Accreditation:

Please note that while the application for program approval is underway, no enrollments, advertisements, or marketing will be entertained until the program is approved by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training.

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. High School Diploma or Equivalent: Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent qualification. Alternatively, mature student status is accepted for individuals aged 19 years or older.
  2. Proof of English Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Domestic students must either have Grade 10 English or successfully complete the English Language Proficiency Assessment Test administered by the college authorities. International students can fulfill this requirement through any of the following options:
  • TOEFL (paper-based): 550
  • TOEFL (computer-based): 210
  • TOEFL (internet-based): 79
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Test (CLB): 5
  • PTE Academic: 50
  • Cambridge: CAE or equivalent
  • Graduation with a Grade 12 diploma from a system where English is the official language
  • Completion of any other internationally recognized English language assessment test with an equivalent score
  • Successful completion of a pre-Intermediate certificate from a Language Canada accredited school
  • Successful completion of the college’s English language proficiency assessment
  • Completion of the 24-week ESL program at the college.

Upon completion of this program, students will be proficiently trained to excel in Facility Management Technology systems, reliably demonstrating the ability to:

  • Perform routine facility and equipment preventive maintenance.
  • Work safely and ensure the safety of building occupants.
  • Operate, monitor, and perform routine maintenance on air conditioning and ventilation systems.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on air compressors.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on chillers and refrigeration systems.
  • Operate, monitor, and perform routine maintenance on water treatment systems.
  • Inspect and verify fire suppression and sprinkler systems.
  • Inspect, test, and verify emergency power and lighting systems.
  • Operate, monitor, and perform routine maintenance on heating systems.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on pumps and pumping systems.
  • Operate, monitor, and perform routine maintenance on low-pressure boilers.
  • Operate electrical systems and perform routine maintenance.
  • Perform routine maintenance on fume hoods.
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on control systems and instrumentation.
  • Inspect and monitor plumbing systems.
  • Monitor and analyze utility consumption.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain building systems effectively.
  • Complete all documentation for work performed in a timely manner.
  • Oversee and execute duties associated with events, ensuring timely setup and breakdown while restoring spaces to their normal state.

The Advanced Diploma in Data Cabling and Security Systems is an industry focused program that provides students with the technical expertise and practical skills required to succeed in the telecommunications, IT infrastructure, and security sectors. The program covers a broad range of topics, including the design, installation, and maintenance of structured cabling systems and advanced security solutions. Students gain hands-on experience with various cabling types, such as Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optics, as well as network devices like switches and routers. They learn to set up, terminate, and test cabling systems, ensuring they meet industry standards and performance benchmarks. Additionally, the program offers in-depth training in security system installation, including CCTV cameras, access control systems, and alarm technologies, enabling students to integrate and maintain secure environments effectively.
The curriculum also integrates project management principles and troubleshooting techniques, equipping students with the problem-solving and organizational skills needed to oversee cabling and security projects from planning to completion. Practical application of theory is reinforced through workshop training using industry standard tools, allowing students to simulate real-world scenarios.

Length of the Program:
The duration of our program encompasses a total of 1440 hours over 72 weeks of comprehensive instruction and hands-on training. Mature Domestic Students:

  • This option applies only if:
  • The program's language of instruction is English.
  • The applicant is a mature domestic student facing barriers.
  • The applicant is unable to access their educational records or provide sufficient proof of secondary/post-secondary education.
  • Accuplacer Assessment:
    • Applicants must be [X] years or older at the start of the program and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
    • Must provide attestation of completing at least three years of full-time education in English in a country where English is one of the primary languages (ELL courses do not count).
    • Must achieve the following minimum scores on the Accuplacer English Assessment (Next Generation):
      • Reading: 230
      • Writing: 230
      • WritePlacer: 4

AND

  1. Math Proficiency Requirements : Successful completion of provincially recognized Grade 10, 11, or 12 Mathematics with a minimum passing score of C.

OR

 Successful completion of a math assessment conducted in-house by Ace Community College with a minimum score of 50%.
