Renewable Energis Technology Diploma

Our Renewable Energy Technology Diploma program is designed to provide hands-on training, equipping students with the skills needed to develop renewable energy sources for a sustainable environment. From airports to schools, stores, and homes, the demand for renewable energy solutions is on the rise, driven by a growing need for electronic solutions to restore peace of mind in an uncertain world.

Renewable energy technicians play a vital role in ensuring the efficient functioning of equipment that collects, generates, or distributes power through alternative means. Whether specializing in solar photovoltaic installation or wind turbine maintenance, these technicians work both indoors and outdoors, collaborating with engineers, designers, and installers to design, plan, and manage the installation of alternative energy systems.

Upon completion of our program, graduates will be adept at installing, maintaining, and repairing equipment that harnesses renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal power.

Our program places a strong emphasis on practical learning, with students spending a significant portion of their time engaged in hands-on activities. From practical exams to trade-related tasks, students will demonstrate their competence in a real-world setting within our dedicated Renewable Energy Technology Technician lab.

Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to gain invaluable industry experience through a 36-week co-op placement with a licensed company, working under the supervision of qualified technicians and engineers.

Developed in consultation with industry experts, our program is tailored to both youth and adults with a passion for the renewable energies industry. Graduates will be prepared for entry-level roles in solar panel installation, wind turbine maintenance, and troubleshooting, where demand is high and earning potential is promising. Employers in the renewable energy technology sector stand to benefit from a highly trained and experienced workforce, contributing to the strengthening of British Columbia’s economy.

With the clean energy sector’s GDP forecasted to grow by 58% by 2030, the demand for skilled professionals in renewable energy technology continues to surge. Our program also emphasizes a hands-on approach to training, with industry-focused experience gained in our workshop complemented by theoretical components integrated into the curriculum. Industry tours provide students with exposure to a variety of work environments, further enhancing their learning experience.

In addition to technical training, students will undergo essential safety certifications, including WHMIS, Working at Heights, Elevating Work Platforms, Lockout & Tag Safety, Scaffold Users’ Hazard Awareness, and Confined Spaces Hazard Awareness. Moreover, students will receive instruction in Canadian electrical code, AutoCAD fundamentals, energy conservation building construction, HVAC systems, technical communications, and more.

General Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Possession of a High School Diploma or Equivalent, or
  2. Mature Student Status (19 years of age or older) and Proof of English Language Proficiency.

English Language Proficiency Admission Requirements
Domestic Students:
Domestic students must demonstrate proficiency in English by meeting one of the following criteria:

  • Completion of Grade 10 English, or
  • Successful completion of the English Language Proficiency Assessment Test administered by College Authorities.

International Students:
International students are required to provide proof of English Language Competency through one of the following options:

  • TOEFL (paper): 550
  • TOEFL (CBT): 210
  • TOEFL (iBT): 79
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Test (CLB): 5
  • PTE Academic: 50
  • Cambridge: CAE or equivalent
  • Graduation with a Grade 12 diploma from an institution where English is the official language, or
  • Successful completion of any other internationally accepted English language assessment test with an equivalent score, or
  • Completion of a pre-Intermediate certificate from a Language Canada accredited school, or
  • Successful completion of the College’s English language proficiency assessment, or
  • Completion of the College’s 24-week ESL program.

Upon completion of this program, students will be trained to work in installation and will have reliably demonstrated the ability to :

  • Design and analyze mechanical components, processes, and systems through the application of engineering principles and practices
  • Design, analyze, build, and troubleshoot passive AC and DC, electronic, logic and digital circuits
  • Apply principles of mechanics and fluid mechanics to the design, analysis and control of electromechanical systems.
  • Install, maintain, operate, troubleshoot and repair power engineering systems by applying principles of science, mathematics, mechanical, electrical, electronic and fluid power engineering.
  • Apply advanced building, architectural, mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering technology to assist with the construction, maintenance, operation and repair of buildings, occupant comfort systems and building energy management systems.
  • Perform all work in accordance with relevant law, policies, codes, regulations, safety procedures, and standard shop practices.
  • Use hand tools, both manual and powered, to install racking and modular components.
  • Maintain safe and organized work site at the job site
  • Install a domestic EV car charging point.
  • Apply knowledge in basic electrical theory, optical and wireless signal transmission
  • Install, maintain, or repair of Geothermal Plants equipment
  • Demonstrate and understand how to construct wind farms
  • Demonstrate how to repair and inspects blades in wind mills.
  • Apply knowledge in engineering, consulting and design firms integrating clean and green energy
  • Apply the knowledge in Biomass and biofuel energy production
  • Practice workplace safety, follow safety codes, and use personal protective equipment such as fall arrest equipment, aerial lift platforms and breathing apparatus
  • Demonstrate the knowledge in solar energy farms and solar panel operations and maintenance.
  • Develop customer service strategies that meet and adapt to individual needs and expectations in accordance with professional standards and ethics.
  • Identify professional development strategies that lead to the enhancement of work performance and career opportunities and keep pace with industry change.
