Solar Energy Training

In a two-week Solar Energy Technician program offered by Ace Community College, the curriculum is condensed yet comprehensive to cover the essential knowledge and skills required for entry-level positions in the solar energy industry. Throughout the program, there is a perfect balance between theoretical instruction, practical training, and hands-on experience to ensure that students are adequately prepared for entry-level positions as solar energy technicians. Additionally, guest lectures from industry professionals and field trips to solar installations can provide real-world insights and networking opportunities for students.

Program Duration: 2 weeks (60 hours)

Comprehensive Curriculum:

  • Theoretical Instruction: Gain a solid understanding of solar energy principles, photovoltaic systems, system components, and installation techniques.
  • Practical Training: Apply theoretical knowledge through hands-on training sessions, simulations, and laboratory exercises.
  • Hands-on Experience: Engage in real-world projects and scenarios to develop practical skills essential for success in the field.

Week 1: Solar Energy Fundamentals

Day 1: Introduction to Solar Energy

  • Overview of solar energy and its importance in renewable energy
  • Historical development and current global trends in solar power

Day 2 and 3: Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems and Components

  • Review of basic Electrical and Electronics for Solar Technicians including fundamentals of electricity: voltage, current, resistance, and power
  • Basics of electrical circuits and wiring techniques Basics of solar PV technology: photovoltaic effect, solar cells, and modules
  • Types of solar PV systems: grid-tied, off-grid, and hybrid systems
  • Components of a solar PV system: solar panels, inverters, mounting structures, and balance of system (BOS) components
  • Functions and characteristics of each component
  • Guest speaker from Solar Industry-Dos and Dont's

Day 4 and 5: Solar PV Installation

  • Site assessment and feasibility analysis for solar PV installations
  • Installation procedures: mounting, wiring, and connecting solar panels and inverters.
  • Safety protocols and best practices during installation
  • Demonstrate in the workshop on how to install a solar panel to participants.
Week 2: Solar Energy advanced

Day 1: System Testing and Commissioning

  • Testing procedures for solar PV systems: performance, insulation, and voltage testing
  • Commissioning and startup procedures for newly installed systems

Day 2: Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Routine maintenance tasks for solar PV systems: cleaning, inspection, and monitoring
  • Common issues and troubleshooting techniques for solar PV installations

Day 3-4: Safety and Regulations

  • Safety regulations and guidelines for working with solar PV systems.
  • Compliance with local building codes, electrical codes, and industry standards

Day 5: Hands-On Practical Training

  • Hands-on exercises and simulations allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.
  • Installation practice on mock solar PV systems
  • Assessment and feedback on skills development
