New Federal Support for Apprentices in Canada: What to Know About the $5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus

For Canadians pursuing careers in the skilled trades, apprenticeship can provide a pathway to industry certification while combining technical training with practical, on-the-job experience.

The federal government has announced several new measures intended to provide financial support to apprentices as they progress through training and work toward certification. One of the most significant is a new $5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus expected to become available later in fall 2026.

For apprentices and individuals considering a skilled-trades career in British Columbia, it is important to understand what has been announced, what support is currently available, and which details are still pending.

What Is the New $5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus?

Under the federal government’s Team Canada Strong skilled-trades initiative, apprentices who complete their apprenticeship and obtain certification in an eligible Red Seal trade will be able to apply for a one-time $5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus.

On September 18, 2026, Employment and Social Development Canada confirmed that the bonus is expected to open for applications later in fall 2026. The government also stated that the bonus will be available to eligible individuals who received their certification on or after April 1, 2025.

Applications are not open yet as of October 1, 2026, and complete application details have not yet been published.

What Happened to the Previous Apprenticeship Grants?

The former Apprenticeship Incentive Grant and Apprenticeship Completion Grant both closed on March 31, 2025 and applications are no longer being accepted.

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant

Previous benefit:
$1,000 per year or level, up to $2,000.

Status:
Closed March 31, 2025.

Apprenticeship Completion Grant

Previous benefit:
One-time $2,000 taxable grant.

Status:
Closed March 31, 2025.

The newly announced $5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus is a separate federal program and should not be confused with these discontinued grants.

Who May Be Eligible?

The Government of Canada has stated that the new bonus is intended for apprentices who complete an apprenticeship and obtain certification in an eligible Red Seal trade designated in their province or territory. Additional details, including the complete list of eligible trades, documentation requirements and application procedures, are expected when the program formally opens.

Training Does Not Automatically Mean Apprenticeship Registration

Taking a college or technical training program does not, by itself, establish eligibility for an apprenticeship benefit.

Apprenticeship in British Columbia is administered through SkilledTradesBC. Eligibility can depend on registration status, the trade, workplace hours, technical-training requirements and certification.

Another Federal Support Is Expected in 2027

$400 / week

Proposed income top-up while eligible apprentices attend mandatory in-class technical training.

The federal Apprenticeship Training Grant is expected to launch in spring 2027 and would be provided in addition to Employment Insurance benefits for eligible apprentices.

Program requirements and application details are expected closer to launch.

Projected construction-sector job openings referenced by the federal government

British Columbia is also expanding skilled-trades training capacity through additional provincial investment and training seats.

What Should Current and Future Apprentices Do?

Important Information for ACE Community College Students

Financial assistance, apprenticeship registration and Red Seal certification are administered by government agencies and apprenticeship authorities and have their own eligibility requirements.

Enrolment in an ACE Community College program does not automatically qualify a student for an apprenticeship grant, loan, tax credit, Red Seal certification or other government benefit.

Students considering an apprenticeship pathway should review current requirements with SkilledTradesBC, Service Canada and the Government of Canada, as applicable to their individual circumstances.
